All types of timber are hydroscopic, which they gain and loose moisture with changes in the relative humidity. Put simply wood expands and contracts throughout the year. Some timbers like beech, have high movement in service, which can make them unstable in some applications. The most important thing for the craftsman to consider is whee this movement wil occur and how to allow for it.
Many cabinet makers have been put off working with solid wood after experiencing problems, because when something goes wrong it costs them money.
In order to make solid timber, what is needed is an understanding of your medium and a lifetime experience is priceless.
